Frederick the Younger, is a lush pop band from Louisville, KY, that has captured the hearts of fans and new listeners alike with their ambient guitar hooks and bombastic rhythms. Their songs blend vintage melodies and uncommon chord changes and are as explosive as they are intimate. Upon the release of their first full-length record, they are currently on tour spreading their sunshine rock to the masses. Today they premiere their dreamy psychedelic rock video for “Horoscope.”
First, we obviously have to say we LOVE this video. Can you tell us a little about how the concept came about?Â
The creative masterminds were directors/producers Duncan Pop and Matt Boyle and DP Danielle Bartley. They used the lights and fog to create a retro look and our friend Meg Bridges did a cool liquid light show.
The colors and vibe of the video are super dreamy and magical. What was your favorite part of filming Horoscope?Â
Thanks! The dreamy vibe was Matt and Duncan’s idea. They had us play along to “Horoscope” at double the speed. So during the shoot, I was actually lip-synching really fast. Then they slowed the video down to match the original tempo, which gave it that dreamy quality. My favorite part of the shoot was hanging out with everyone. Matt, Duncan, and Danielle are so much fun to work with.
Where is your coat from that you wear in the video? It looks most likely vintage, if so does it have a story behind where and when you got it? (which store, time in your life it came from, etc) It’s perfect btw. Â
I wish I knew! It was a gift from my aunt who lives in southern California. It doesn’t have a tag on it. I love it too!
You have an amazingly cool 60’s rock vibe to your vocals. Who are some of your influences from that era?Â
Thank you! One of my favorite female singers of all time is Patsy Cline. I listened to her on repeat when I was younger.  “Crazy” is one of my favorite songs. The character of her voice influenced me a lot.
If you could see any concert from the past which one would you pick?Â
The Beatles in Hamburg Germany before they came to the USA. It seems like there was something very magical about that time in their musical evolution and I would love to experience it.
You’re currently on tour yourself, with your debut album out earlier this month, this must be a very exciting time for you and the band right now! What has been your favorite part so far?
Honestly, I love it all. I live for the experience of playing live. Feeling the energy in the room. Every show is different and exciting. Meeting new people, traveling to new places. I just want to do it every day, all the time.
We notice you don’t have any west coast dates planned yet? Are there any plans in the works to do more touring and head out that way? Yes, stay tuned! We are planning to go to the west coast later on in the year.
Which venue would be your dream venue to play?
So many! Red Rocks amphitheater, Bowery Ballroom in NYC, The El Rey in LA, The Ryman Auditorium, Sweetwater in San Francisco…
Finally, what was your last horoscope you read? Anything interesting in your future you can tell us?
I love reading my horoscope. I read it every day. My horoscope today says, “you have more power than you realize, Aries. Yes, it is in your hands to a large degree.”  Thanks, universe.
