Norwegian singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Tuvaband returns with her new single, “I’m Safely Passing In Time,” a track that reflects how the past and future pull us away from the present.
Blending R&B, hip hop, and woozy, cinematic textures, the song creates a hypnotic sound that draws you in from the very first note. Its rhythm is steady but slightly offbeat, giving it a distinctive character. Above all, it’s the otherworldly vocals that drive the song and infuse it with a surreal atmosphere.
Tuva Hellum Marschhäuser, the mind behind Tuvaband, explains that the song was inspired by the idea of traveling through time while struggling to remain grounded in the present. “The future feels like a blank space for imagination, and the past can hold us in its grip. But the present asks for something more immediate, and that can be harder to face,” she shared.
The single draws on unexpected influences. Partly inspired by The Fugees, it features a heavy bassline that emerged by chance during production. A viola, performed by Håkon Brunborg Kjenstad, adds depth to the arrangement, weaving seamlessly with Tuva’s own MIDI strings. Tuva handled every part of the process: writing, recording, producing, performing, and mixing, underscoring her commitment to creative independence.
Over the past seven years, Tuvaband has built a career rooted in that independence. She has released four albums, two EPs, and a collaborative record with the experimental group New Age Doom. Her music has garnered over 40 million streams on Spotify and earned her two Norwegian Grammy nominations, including one for her last album.
Tuvaband continues to chart her own path. The single reflects her ongoing drive to explore sound and meaning without compromise while revealing how her music can still evolve in unexpected ways. As she puts it, “It’s easier to drift in time, but the real challenge—and maybe the real magic—is in staying here, now.”
