Celebrating the 30th anniversary of her iconic album “WHALER,” Sophie B. Hawkins returns with a stunning reimagining titled “Whaler Re-Emerging.” This fantastic take breathes new life into a beloved classic, transforming it into something even more powerful and emotionally resonant.
“Whaler Re-Emerging” opens with the folky yet driving energy of “Right Beside You,” where Sophie’s expressive vocals guide listeners through an intimate story. “Did We Not Choose Each Other” stands out as another highlight, taking us on a serene, introspective journey. Meanwhile, “True Romance” enchants with its delicate piano melodies and haunting lyrics, and “I Need Nothing Else” delivers an authentic, soul-baring confession that showcases Hawkins at her most vulnerable.
Sophie invites both longtime fans and new listeners to rediscover the songs that helped define her sound. “The songs on this album are some of the sweetest and ripest I’ve yet written,” she shares. “They fill me with hope and joy.” For Hawkins, “WHALER” marked a time of “true romance” in her life, a feeling she recaptures here.
She and her collaborator, Seth, first performed the songs live before recording them over just two days with Andrew Oedel at Ghost Hit Recording in Massachusetts. Her vocals remain completely untouched, no tuning, no edits, because, as she said, “I think the raw and unfiltered me is the best me.”
To celebrate the release, Sophie is embarking on the Whaler Acoustic Tour 2025 this October, bringing her music to life across Canada. The journey begins in Saskatchewan with performances in North Battleford and Prince Albert, then moves through Alberta with stops in Camrose, Fort Saskatchewan, St. Albert, Red Deer, and Calgary. She’ll continue east to Manitoba, lighting up the stages in Brandon and Winnipeg, before wrapping up the month with two shows in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia.
