Brooklyn-based singer, songwriter, and producer J Rose, now performing under the name Washburn and the River, is set to release his self-produced EP, “Space Holder.” The six-track project showcases the full breadth of his artistic growth, blending introspective songwriting with dynamic instrumentation. He is joined by Michael Eliran (Dolly) on guitar, Steve Xia on drums, and John Lisi (touring bassist for Mei Simones and The Brazen Youth) on bass, bringing depth and nuance to the record.
“Separate Days” starts things off and serves as the perfect introduction to Washburn and the River’s unique style. The soothing melody paired with his fantastic vocals is a winning combination. The song feels dreamlike, almost as if we are stepping through a portal into his personal soundscape. Lead track “Hung Up” follows, keeping the momentum strong. A melancholic reflection for anyone still caught in the orbit of a lost love, the song’s harmonious guitars elevate it to a new level. “Hone In” is another highlight, offering layers of emotion, each one more profound than the last. It is exciting yet calming, striking a perfect balance. “Good News” explores relationships that do not quite align.
Next is “Always Always,” continuing the dreamlike journey. You will feel a bit like Alice wandering through Wonderland listening to this one. Its trippy, nostalgic aura recalls the 70s, an intentional nod from Washburn and the River as he channels the energy of that era. Last but not least is “Should’ve Known,” a soft indie-rock ballad that ties everything together. It is a fitting and heartfelt conclusion to the journey he has crafted.
Washburn and the River’s “Space Holder” reads like a journal of emotional turning points, gentle, tense, hopeful, and unflinchingly honest in its attempt to understand the distances we create between one another and the versions of ourselves we eventually grow beyond.
