Emily Vaughn’s latest single, “What Do You Want,” is more than just a glistening electro-pop jewel: It’s a message of empowerment. Using a bouncy backing of instrumentals — including dainty, twinkling synths — and the singer’s effervescent, but confident soprano, the singer constructs a powerful tale of finding your inner strength.
Directed by Joe Desantis and premiering exclusively on LADYGUNN today, the video uses appealing visual elements as metaphors, following the singer as she breaks free from the literal chains and puppet strings of a controlling relationship. Speaking with us, Vaughn detailed how the video is meant to inspire others.
“My videographer Joe Desantis and I worked very hard to portray the metaphorical implication behind this video,” she shared. “The two of us literally created every set by hand and tore it down after the scenes were done around 3 a.m. every night. I wanted every scene to imply a physical and mental lack of control brought on by the manipulation of someone else, and then visually regain that control. This video is very personal to me as it was inspired by a toxic relationship in my life, so I truly hope it inspires my viewers to find it in themselves to break the chains of manipulation and control, regardless of how impossible it may seem.”
