“You can’t kill what’s already dead.” Coming from Carla Harvey, it sounds less like surrender and more like an invitation to try.

On “Already Dead,” The Violent Hour digs into the ugly aftermath of being pushed too far: the exhaustion, the numbness, and the strange freedom of realizing someone has nothing left to hold over you. Harvey delivers that realization with teeth, daring her tormentor to take another shot.

Written by Harvey, Charlie Benante, and Blair Daly, the track stacks images of fire, poison, and a body cut open on a table against a recurring challenge: “Go ahead, try it.” Every threat meets the same resistance. But beneath the bravado is someone who has paid dearly for her armor.

“‘Already Dead’ is about reaching a point where someone has put you through so much that they can’t hurt you anymore. There’s nothing left for them to take, and that can become its own kind of power,” Harvey explains.

Distorted guitars and heavy riffs give that defiance a suitably bruising backdrop. With its nineties post-grunge bite, the song lets anger and exhaustion rub against each other, building toward an explosive release. Harvey sounds ready for a fight, even as the lyrics reveal what it took to get her there.

That friction gives “Already Dead” its edge. Having no tears left might feel like invincibility, but it also means you’ve cried them all. Then comes a line that opens a way forward: “I come back stronger every time.” Suddenly, survival has somewhere to go.

Directed by Vicente Cordero, the accompanying video takes the song’s death imagery into territory Harvey knows intimately. A former funeral director and embalmer with a master’s degree in thanatology, she brings a particular familiarity to its morgue setting. The result is theatrical and irreverent, with Harvey turning the imagery of her former profession into a stage for defiance.

The Violent Hour emerged after Harvey’s departure from Butcher Babies, where she spent fifteen years as one of the band’s vocalists. Writing with Benante, known for his work in Anthrax and Pantera, gave her space to revisit the rock, punk, and metal that shaped her. The project’s live lineup brings Harvey together with lead guitarist Kiana De León, drummer Sasha De León, bassist Jewel Steele, and rhythm guitarist Allie Kaye.

“Already Dead” offers a preview of “Pretty Girls Do Ugly Things,” the band’s eleven-track debut album, arriving January 22, 2027. Its themes of survival and transformation are already taking shape here, in a song that understands how messy it can be to keep going.

Harvey leaves that mess intact. The hurt is still audible. So is her appetite for another round.
